Description: Patent Prosecution/Material Sciences/EE

Position: Associate

Notes: We've just completed a placement at an up and coming DC/N.VA IP boutique that has now asked us to repeat the process albeit for an associate with a different background that will be focused on a different discipline.

Work is mainly preparation and prosecution of patents in the area of semiconductor device manufacturing and fabrication processes transistor level circuit analysis, electrical engineering and software associated with semiconductor manufacturing. You will interface with foreign inventors and IP counsel to obtain US patents for our U.S. and foreign based clients. Portable business is not required as work is plentiful and long term. Ideally, you should possess strong client communication and development skills with the desire and ability to take a lead role in managing and growing client accounts.

Must have a minimum of 2 years' experience along with a B.S. in Material Science or Electrical Engineering with experience in either semiconductor manufacturing or in drafting patent applications on semiconductor manufacturing inventions. However, candidates with a B.S. or advanced degree in other technical fields such as physics, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering will be considered, particularly with industry experience in semiconductor devices and their fabrication. Mandarin Chinese language skills a plus.

Duties may also include drafting and analysis of patent re-examinations as well as opinions of counsel; management and direction of foreign counsel; client counseling, infringement analysis, validity analysis, re-examination and reissue request drafting, IP licensing, IP due diligence, and assistance with marketing and client development efforts; possible review and management of junior associate work product for senior candidates; and direction of paralegal staff.

The firm offers a unique compensation structure which provides a generous base salary with an expectation of 1550 minimum billable hours per year. For those who generate over 1550 billable hours per year, they offer a formula-based bonus for each billed hour over 1550 hours. Total compensation is based on productivity and billable hours and is projected to be similar to that of large law firms for candidates interested in billing large law firm hours although that is not a mandatory expectation.
